About the Mats

Yes โ€” and it has been for thousands of years. The synthetic mat is a modern invention. Cotton has been the surface for yoga and meditation across South Asian traditions for centuries. Our dual-weave surface develops grip over time: the more you practise on it, the better it performs.

Cotton grip works differently from rubber. A rubber mat grips from material tack. A cotton mat grips from the woven surface structure โ€” and that grip improves with use and sweat. Most practitioners notice a significant improvement after 10โ€“15 sessions. For smooth studio floors, the Cotton-Fusion (Anti-Skid) variant adds a natural rubber base for immediate grip.

DualWeave (Reversible) โ€” 100% cotton both sides. Fully compostable, machine washable. Best for carpet, grass, outdoor, textured surfaces.

Cotton-Fusion (Anti-Skid) โ€” Cotton top with natural rubber base. Best for smooth studio floors and hot yoga. Steam clean or vacuum.

Cork Mats โ€” Natural cork top with natural rubber or cotton base. Naturally antimicrobial. Grip improves when wet โ€” excellent for hot yoga and high-traffic studios.

PU Natural Rubber Mats โ€” Polyurethane top surface with natural rubber base. Immediate grip from session one. Wipe-clean for rapid studio turnover. Best for Vinyasa, Power and high-frequency use.

Both Cotton-Fusion and Cork mats are excellent for hot yoga. Cotton absorbs moisture and grip improves with sweat. Cork is naturally antimicrobial and also grips better when wet. PU mats have immediate grip that holds in heat. For studios running hot yoga classes, Cotton-Fusion or Cork mats with rubber bases are most commonly chosen.

10โ€“15 sessions is typical. During this time, the cotton fibres open up and the grip surface activates. For studios with rental mats, we recommend having staff do a few practice sessions before putting mats into regular rotation.

Anchor colours (Desert Sand, Emerald Forest, Nimbus Cloud, Saffron Blaze, Arctic Sky) are permanently available. Always safe to reorder.

Seasonal colours rotate approximately every six months. Limited quantities per season.

Limited Edition colours are released once per year in strictly limited quantities. Contact us to check availability.

Bolsters, Cushions & Blocks

Kapok is a natural fibre harvested from the seed pods of the kapok tree โ€” no tree is cut down. It is naturally resilient, resistant to mould, and lighter than cotton fill. It compresses slightly under body weight and springs back, maintaining shape over thousands of sessions. Kapok is the ideal fill for props that need to last.

Start with the oblong bolster โ€” the most universally useful shape. Stable flat base, works under knees, under hips, under the spine. Covers 90% of bolster-supported poses. Add the round bolster as your second purchase for heart-opening and backbend sequences.

No. We stock cork yoga blocks only. Cork is naturally antimicrobial, moisture-resistant, firm under load, and sustainable. Foam blocks deform over time and grow bacteria between sessions. For studios that want to offer a quality, durable block, cork is the right choice.

Care & Longevity

With proper care, a Modern Yogi cotton mat lasts 5โ€“10 years of regular practice. Many practitioners find their mat performs better after two years than it did new โ€” the cotton fibres open and settle with use.

Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Do not tumble dry. Lay flat or hang to air dry. No bleach, no fabric softener. Store rolled loosely โ€” not folded. Grip improves with regular washing.

Spot clean with a damp cloth. Steam clean or vacuum for deeper cleaning. Do not submerge โ€” the rubber base should not be soaked. No bleach. Store rolled, not folded.

Both cork and PU mats: wipe down with a damp cloth after each use. Use a mild soap solution for deeper cleaning. Do not submerge โ€” the natural rubber base should stay dry. Air dry flat or rolled. No bleach.
