The evidence

Several lines of research point the same way.

Range improves faster than tissue can change. People gain substantial range within a single session and within a few weeks. Collagen remodelling — actual change in the length of connective tissue — takes months. The early gains cannot be tissue.

Stretch tolerance rises, stiffness often does not. Where researchers have measured both the range achieved and the resistance felt at a given angle, the range increases while the mechanical stiffness of the tissue stays similar. What changed is how much sensation the person will accept.

Anaesthetised muscle has far more range than the same muscle in a conscious person. The limit in the conscious case is protective, not structural.

Strength training through full range improves flexibility about as effectively as stretching does. If flexibility were simply tissue length, that would be surprising.

Contract-relax methods work immediately. Contracting a muscle against resistance for a few seconds and then releasing produces an instant gain in range. Nothing about the tissue has changed in five seconds; the nervous system has released a brake.

What is actually limiting you

Four things, in rough order of how often they are the answer.

1. Protective tension. The nervous system limits range it does not trust — because it is unfamiliar, because you have no strength there, or because you have been forced into it. This is the largest factor for most people.

2. Genuine tissue length. Real, and less common than assumed. It changes slowly, over months, with consistent exposure.

3. Strength deficit. A muscle that cannot control a range will not be given the range. This is why some people stretch for years without lasting change.

4. Bone. Some limits are structural. Hip socket depth and femoral neck angle vary considerably between people, and where bone meets bone, no practice changes it.

How to tell which one is yours

Does your range vary a lot day to day? Tissue length does not change overnight. Nervous-system tone does. Big daily variation means protective tension.

Does a stretch work for two hours and then vanish? Same answer.

Is the end feel soft and stretchy, or hard and blocked? Soft is tissue or protection. Hard and abrupt, with no stretching sensation, is bone.

Can you get into the position but not hold it under your own power? Strength deficit.

Have you been stretching consistently for six months with no change? Almost certainly not a tissue problem. Try strength.

What to do differently

Load the range, do not just stretch it

The most important change.

Strength training through full range does at least as much for flexibility as stretching, and it produces range you can actually use. It also addresses the protective limit directly — the nervous system stops guarding a range once you have shown it you can control it.

Practically: deep squats, single-leg deadlifts, full-range overhead pressing, and long isometric holds at end range.

In yoga: actively engage in your stretches rather than hanging. In a supine hamstring stretch, press the leg back against the strap at half effort for five seconds, then release and see if it goes further. Repeat three or four times. That is contract-relax, and it produces immediate and lasting change.

Frequency over intensity

Tissue and nervous system both respond to repeated moderate exposure better than to occasional punishing sessions.

Two to three minutes per position, most days, at four or five out of ten beats fifteen minutes once a week at eight out of ten. Comfortably.

Stop pushing to eight

High-intensity stretching triggers the protective response you are trying to reduce. It produces guarding, not release.

The productive range is around four to five out of ten for long holds. Most people work far above this and it is why their long holds do not work.

Be patient with the nervous system

Protective tension often has a reason. After an injury, under sustained stress, in an unfamiliar position — the guarding is doing a job.

Forcing it makes it worse, reliably. Long, low-intensity, fully supported holds where nothing is being demanded produce more change than effort does.

What this means for your practice

Measure the right thing. Not how far you fold. The height of the blanket you need to sit on with a neutral pelvis. The width of your grip on a strap overhead. How straight your knee is with your lower back flat. Those numbers move slowly and honestly.

Expect the early gains to be fast and the later ones slow. The first three months are largely nervous system and they feel great. Months six to twenty-four are tissue and strength, and they are much slower. This is normal and it is not a plateau.

Do not chase shapes your skeleton will not produce. Lotus, front splits, a flat pigeon. Some bodies do them easily and some never will, and pursuing them past a hard bony end point is how knees and hips get damaged.

Do not assume flexible is good. Hypermobile people have all the range and none of the control, and they are injured in yoga more often than stiff people, not less. If you are on the mobile end, your work is strength.

The one-sentence version

Most of what limits your range is a nervous system that has not been given a reason to trust the position — so give it one, by getting strong in it, going there often, and not forcing it.
